Nutty Cinnamon Green Smoothie

Greens are so healthy…and they taste healthy too. Don’t get me wrong – I love bitter greens. I love them in a salad, stir-fry, soup, or sautéed with a little oil and garlic. They compliment most meals perfectly and have all sorts of health benefits. I have posted about green smoothies before, but I would like to share a secret combination of ingredients I discovered while trying to salvage my basic green smoothie recipe that I obviously didn’t follow. It ended up tasting like I was drinking grass.

Since I am giving myself a little cleanse, sugar is not on my current menu. That means I couldn’t use my usual go-to’s for saving a smoothie from extra greenness. Instead, I went a nutty route. I added almond butter, maca powder, and cinnamon.

Nutty Green Smoothie Recipe:

  • 1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
  • dark leafy greens, handful
  • 1 cucumber
  • celery, 1 stalk
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 granny smith apple
  • 1 lime or lemon
  • 1 tsp. chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 tsp hemp powder (optional)
  • sea salt to taste (about 1/4 tsp)
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (I used almond)
  • 2 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • love

Although the nutty-cinnamon addition is a yummy flavor, no amount of wishing will make this smoothie sweet. So, for many people who have a pallet accustomed to sweeter tastes, adding raw honey, fruit, or dates are healthier options than refined sugar. There are also sugar-free options for sweetening such as stevia or xylitol, which don’t feed unwanted yeast in your digestive tract or play games with your glycemic index and blood sugar levels. If you have no reason to avoid sugar, I would suggest adding a banana or mango to this recipe to sweeten it up a little. If you are avoiding sugar for whatever reason, you can join me in a non-sweet, nutty-cinnamon bliss. ❤
